The Northern Virginia Technology Council has identified five kinds of jobs that are hard-to-fill: big data and analytics; cybersecurity and privacy; data center and cloud infrastructure; network systems and programming and software development.
In 2018 World Economic Forum identified that by 2022, 85% of companies will have adopted big data and analytics technologies.
IBM projects that by 2020, demand for data and analytics professionals will increase by 3.64 thousand to 2.72 million openings.
Per Robert Half Technology’s 2019 Salary Guide says, “Data analysts have an earning potential of between $81,750 and $138,000…salary increases if worker has Python or R experience.”
Splunk is a powerful platform that is capable of analyzing large sets of data by running thousands of searches simultaneously in real-time through the Search Processing Language (SPL). Per Forbes, big data industry grew 704% globally over the last five years. According to Indeed, Splunk jobs pay up to $148,590 for a solutions architect and $120,000 for a senior system engineer.
In the short time since the Amazon Web Services certification program launched in 2013, AWS certified professionals already rank among the highest paid IT certification holders. According to a recent salary survey from Global Knowledge, the average wage for AWS certified individuals is $113,932. The cloud computing sector has grown from $182 billion in 2018 to $206 billion in 2019 and is projected to grow 17 to 24 percent annually per Gartner forecast. Amazon HQ2 has already opened offices in Crystal City and recently hired 400 employees and will hire 25k employees in the next few years with an average salary of $150k.
Virginia boasts the highest concentration of cybersecurity experts in the country according to the workforce research firm Burning Glass Technologies. These professionals totaled 67,850 in 2016.
